The Final Set

At this point in time, it is almost 20 years after the most famous band of the Philippines captured the pinoy music scene. They are once tagged as a legendary band and even considered as our own version of “The Beatles”. But every legend has its end.

Year 2002 when the once fruitful rock band part ways after their lead vocalist decided to leave his band mates with a single text message. Of course now you have an idea to whom I’m referring to, it’s absolutely them. The Eraserheads.

We can still remember the days when these four boys from University of the Philippines, Diliman captured our hearts with songs like Pare Ko, Alapaap, Overdrive, and many more. They’ve been part of our everyday lives. Starting from reminiscing the past like Minsan up to being problematic on how to court a girl in Torpedo which let us relate our own life with their song.

The band who serenades us for a long time has been kind to us by giving us tons of songs relieving the pain of every day’s challenges but I think time was not too kind for the boys. Just like what I said earlier, every legend has its end. With the fame they had from the year they was form from 1989 up to 2002 what else can they wish for? They have lots of fans, dozens of albums which always hit the market, tons of awards given to them as an artist and of course respect from different artist in their industry. But sadly, they need to have a break.

After all they've been through, the fame, recognition and everything; it’s so far from reality that a great band will come to an end. In my opinion, they should not decide the way they decide on how they will end the band. From a simple text message started the downfall of the once “pillar” like band.

Of course, even though there are conflicts, everyone has a second chance.

Year 2008, everyone was surprised when the boys Ely Buendia, Buddy Zabala, Marcus Adoro and Raimund Marasigan decided to share the same stage once again for a one night event called “Eraserheads:The Reunion Concert”. After all the controversies they had from the departure of Ely to the conflict between Raimund and Ely, they decisively face the fans once more to show that they are reunited as band and brothers.

The decision of sharing the same stage after all that happened, it is an act of showing professionalism in work which is very good. It is also good to see that a once parted band can join each other again not just for the fans but also for the sake of the band itself.

To support the things that I stated, the band is having a one night concert once more which will be the conclusion of everything. Conclusion in a way that they are trying to close the book of Eraserheads. That will be on their Final Set on March 7.

The “Eraserheads: The Final Set” might be the last for the ‘heads but their memory left in each and every one of us will never fade. Just like the fan of the ‘heads once said “Eraserheads can never be Erase in our Heads.”

Edit: This article is made last July 2010 as a requirement for our Magazine Writing Subject. As a matter of fact, Eraserheads had a series of concert last Oct 12-20 for their “Eraserheads: The North American Reunion Tour 2012”.
